Getting Ready for Earth Day

As we move closer to Earth Day (April 22, 2011),  I wanted to share an article in the AJC, (Sunday April 10, 2011) about Earth Day and how our young people are becoming police officers of the Earth. A younger generation is teaching us as parents to do better with recycling, composting, walking instead of driving, and resusing those card board boxes from cereal and toy boxes to make crafty items such as cardboard toys.

It is a community effort to give back to the Earth what it has given to us. Some communities are prospering with this effort more than others. But we can all do our part to make a better planet for generations to come. Read this article on AJC.com and find ways to do your part to make the earth a cleaner place to live. http://www.ajc.com/lifestyle/going-green-is-kid-904475.html

Kid Entrepreneurs

Go to fullsize image
So I just completed reading an excellent article about grooming children to become entreprenuers called Kid Entrepreneurs - Setting the Envrionment on Raising Them by Bruce Bender http://ezinearticles.com/?Kid-Entrepreneurs---Setting-the-Environment-on-Raising-Them&id=6144338. The author and I speak the same language about schools and how they do an excellent job in creating efficient and productive workers, but their is not an emphasis on becoming entrepreneurial leaders.

We as parents of course want our children to go as far in life as their little hearts desire, but are we creating an environment to produce that outcome? I would say that if we are not...this article provides a lot of good information that can set our children on a path to being many different kinds of leaders in the world.

Speaking from an the standpoint of an entrepreneur, we have already adopted a lot of the practices mentioned in the article as a part of our everyday lifestyle. What can you do as a parent, friend or relative to encourage young people that becoming an entrepreneur as a kid or an adult is a realistic goal? Creativekidzplay would love to hear from you.

What's Happening Now?

Watch out for April Fool’s Day! April Fool’s Day occurs on the 1st day of April every year and it celebrates jokes and foolishness. It is also called All Fool’s Day. Did you know that in some countries such as New Zealand, the UK, Australia, and South Africa, the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool"?  Elsewhere, such as in France, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Russia, The Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Canada, and the U.S., the jokes last all day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fools%27_Day.
April Fool’s Day is a day of fun and jokes but make sure if you are playing a joke on someone, please play responsibly. Make sure that your joke is funny and not harmful!
April is chock full of much needed rain that brings those beautiful May flowers that we enjoy picking and looking at as we move through the spring time. But what do we do on those rainy days after school and on the weekends when it doesn’t seem to stop? Rainy spring days are perfect to begin washing and putting away winter clothing since the winter season has ended for most of us. While indoors it is a great time to play games with your children such as putting puzzles together, reading, playing games, and getting organized. Whatever activities you plan with your family during the rainy spring season, whether indoors or out, be present to the experience and make the time together count.

National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month is a celebration of poetry first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. It is celebrated every April in the United States and (since 1999) in Canada as well. National Poetry Month was inspired by the success of Black History Month which is celebrated in February. Each year, publishers, booksellers, educators and literary organizations use April to promote poetry: publishers often release and publicize their poetry titles in April, teachers and librarians focus on poetry units during the month; and bookstores and reading series frequently hold special readings. National Poetry Writing Month encourages writing a poem a day in celebration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Poetry_Month.
How will you celebrate National Poetry Month this April? Try looking for events in your city that you can attend related to National Poetry Month or simply learn about poetry writers and artists in your area.

Child Nutrition Month
The Month of April is also Child Nutrition Month which bring awareness to the fact that many of our children’s diets are deficient in the dietary needs that make us healthy such as fiber, vitamin D, calcium, fiber and protein. Making sure that children have a healthy breakfast that consists of oats, grain, and fruits are a great beginning to a healthy day. Drinking low fat milk, and eating peanut butter for protein are some of the suggestions made by The American Dietetic Association who is one of the leaders in promoting Child Nutrition Month. Earth Day
Earth Day is a birthday party for the Earth. It began on April 22, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Over 100 countries including the United States participates in celebrating Earth Day. Earth Day was created for us to remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment.
Some ways to achieve this goal is to put garbage in the trash instead of littering our world, recycling plastics and metals, planting more trees, and carpooling to reduce the amount of toxins emitted in the air by burning fuel from cars.
Celebrate Earth Day this year by doing your part to help improve the environment that we live in. To find out more about Earth Day, follow the link to http://www.epa.gov/superfund/kids/earthday.htm.
