Jazz & Soul Artist, Julie Dexter visits the Creativekidzplay Arts Enrichment Program

The Creativekidzplay Arts Enrichment Program had the pleasure of an up and close visit with  jazz and soul star Julie Dexter for the music and songwriting component. She spoke with students about the importance of reading, witing, and math in a songwriter and performing artists career, the mechanics of breathing when performing, royalties and publishing, and the many places her career has allowed her to travel. Students got to sit down with her one on one and ask real questions about the rigors of surviving in the music industry and what it takes to be as successful as possible.

Julie even taught the students one of her favorite songs, Afro Blue, by  Mongo Santamaría but best arranged by John Coltrane. Students sang the song for Julie after brief instruction of the first verse and chorus. Next, students received an acapella performance of Afro Blue similar to how she performs it for a live packed audience. Thank you Julie for giving your time and talent to mentor and educate our youth.
